API Development with Node.js, Next.js, and Rails

I work on APIs as part of full-stack product development: designing route behavior, connecting it to persistence, validating input, and presenting useful responses in the interface. My experience spans Express, Next.js API routes, and Rails controllers and APIs.

At a glance

  • Built and integrated Express and Next.js API functionality.
  • Connected frontend behavior to Rails controllers and APIs at RobinReach.
  • Worked with authenticated product data and database-backed operations.

Route contracts and product behavior

An API route is a contract between the caller and the application. The contract should state which input is accepted, which user is allowed to act, how persistence changes, and what response the caller can depend on. I build and integrate API behavior with those questions in view.

My experience includes Express and Next.js API routes, plus Rails controller and API integration. At RobinReach, frontend changes had to work with the application's established Rails behavior instead of assuming a new backend could be introduced for each feature.

Validation and failure responses

Good API behavior includes failure cases. Invalid input, missing records, authorization failures, and server errors should remain distinguishable so the caller can respond correctly and users are not shown misleading success states.

In projects that consume external services or AI models, I also validate returned data before using it. OpenMate uses runtime schemas and grounding checks so generated suggestions remain connected to canonical GitHub issues and paths from the repository.
