Chrome Extension Development: The SaveIt Bookmark Manager
SaveIt is my Chrome extension project: a new-tab bookmark manager built with JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and Manifest V3. It organizes links into categories and sections, integrates open tabs, and stores bookmark data locally in IndexedDB with JSON import and export.

At a glance
- SaveIt overrides Chrome's new-tab page with a bookmark workspace.
- Bookmarks and settings are persisted in browser-local IndexedDB.
- Open-tab capture, search, drag and drop, and JSON backup and restore are implemented.
A local-first browser extension
SaveIt replaces Chrome's default new-tab page with a bookmark workspace. Users organize saved links into categories and collapsible sections, search the current category, adjust section layouts, and reorder items with drag and drop.
The extension uses Manifest V3 and the Chrome Tabs API to list open tabs, switch to a tab, or save tabs into a section. Bookmark records and workspace settings are stored in IndexedDB in the browser rather than an application server.
Data portability is a product feature
Browser-local storage has a clear tradeoff: the user keeps data locally, and clearing browser data can remove it. SaveIt addresses that limitation with JSON export and import for backup and transfer to another browser.
The project demonstrates browser extension work beyond a popup: manifest configuration, a new-tab interface, local persistence, tab integration, and a recovery path for the user's saved data.
